Christian Legal Clinics of Philadelphia heading with city skyline

AyudaAbout Us

Who We Are

We are Christian attorneys, called by the Word of God to do justice among the poor, inspired by the work in cities across the country by Christian Legal Society's Legal Aid Ministry, and working together for over five years by providing legal services to low income clients in the name of Christ.

What We Do

We have started two legal aid clinics, in North and West Philadelphia, the poorest sections of the city. Our clinics are housed by ministries who have been serving the needs of the community for many years. Our West Philadelphia clinic is at the Salvation Army at 5501 Market Street, and has a largely African American clientele with many family, housing and credit issues. Our North Philadelphia clinic is at the Ayuda Community Center, 4400 N. Marshall Street, and has a largely Latino clientele with many family, housing and immigration issues.

Our Vision

Our vision is to establish Christian legal aid clinics in the Philadelphia area which will work in cooperation with existing community based ministries in the neighborhood to provide legal and spiritual services with the love of God to low income clients to help transform our clients, their families, the church and the city of Philadelphia in a way that will increase the Kingdom of God.

How We Do It

Clinic clients receive a free one hour consultation where they meet with one of our licensed volunteer clinic attorneys. Where appropriate, the attorney will offer to pray with the client and address spiritual and family concerns which may be at the root of the legal problems. Where ongoing representation is indicated, we coordinate referrals to qualified counsel through our network of referral attorneys who accept cases on a pro bono or reduced fee basis. We seek to connect clients to local ministries and churches to address ongoing spiritual needs. Law students from Penn Law schools participate in the West Phila. clinic as part of Penn’s clinical program.

CLCWhy We Do It

We are compelled by the Word of God to use our legal gifts to serve the poor:

How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked? Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless, maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. (Psalm 82:2-4)

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. (Proverbs 31:8)

Seek justice, encourage the oppressed, defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow. (Isaiah 1:17)

Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen? To loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter, when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? (Isaiah 58:6)

The Lord looked and was displeased that there was no justice. He saw that there was no one. He was appalled that there was no one to intervene. (Isaiah 59:11)

He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8)
